New Westminster, B.C. – The City of New Westminster is honoured to announce New Media Gallery (NMG) has received a generous donation of $40,000 from the Thompson-Wipp family, who live and work in New Westminster. The donation comes as an expression of gratitude for the Gallery’s work in supporting cultural expression, encouraging creative and critical thinking, and fostering community.
The donation will be distributed in allotments of $10,000 over the next four exhibitions, thereby enhancing NMG’s offerings through the 2023-2024 period. The significant contribution will help further the Gallery's commitment to creating engaging exhibitions and educational opportunities that encourage a broad understanding of how technology can be used for creative purposes, pedagogy, critical thinking and the creation of meaning.
“The City of New Westminster is grateful to the Thompson-Wipp family for their generosity in supporting New Media Gallery in its pursuit of delivering world-class contemporary visual art exhibitions and programming. This donation contributes to positioning Anvil Centre and New Westminster as an arts destination,” said Mayor Patrick Johnstone.
The creation of a flourishing, diverse and disparate arts scene is a critical component of the City’s 2023-2026 Strategic Priorities Plan and contributes greatly to successful civic development. Further to being committed patrons of NMG, the Thompson-Wipp family have been long-time supporters of high-quality, visionary arts and culture in New Westminster, encouraging its growth as a vital part of the local economy.
“New Westminster is very fortunate to have a world class gallery in its community. With its unique approach to combining technology with art, New Media Gallery has succeeded in creating one of the most engaging and socially relevant galleries in the Lower Mainland,” said the Thompson-Wipp family.
Founded in 2014, New Media Gallery is a contemporary art gallery operated by the City of New Westminster.
