New Westminster, B.C. – The City of New Westminster is pleased to announce the appointment of Shehzad Somji as the City’s new Director of Finance. Shehzad is an accomplished financial professional with extensive experience in the fields of accounting and finance, and holds Chartered Professional Accountant and Certified General Accountant designations. Shehzad will begin his role with the City on December 1, 2023.

Shehzad began his career at First Credit Union, where he served as the controller and then Chief Financial Officer for 19 years. During his time there, he played a pivotal role in the financial management and strategic planning of the organization, helping to position it as a leading financial institution in the region. After his successful tenure at First Credit Union, Shehzad took on the role of Chief Financial Officer for the City of Powell River where he led the City’s financial operations and oversaw budgeting, financial reporting, technology, and economic development.

“On behalf of the City of New Westminster, I would like to welcome Shehzad Somji to our organization,” said Lisa Spitale, the City’s Chief Administrative Officer. “We are very fortunate to have Shehzad as our new Director of Finance. Given the many opportunities that New Westminster is pursuing, Shehzad’s leadership and financial expertise will be a real asset to our organization.”

In 2016, Shehzad returned to the Lower Mainland and assumed the role of Secretary Treasurer for School District No. 48 (Sea to Sky). In this role, he was responsible for managing the district’s finances, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and providing strategic financial guidance to senior leaders and the Board of Education. He then joined the Vancouver School Board as the Assistant Secretary Treasurer in 2018.

Throughout his career, Shehzad has demonstrated a strong commitment to excellence and a passion for delivering high quality financial services. He has built a reputation as a trusted advisor and strategic thinker, and he is widely respected for his integrity, work ethic, and leadership skills.
