What's New
Canadian Union of Postal Workers Strike

Update: October 14

Customers should expect delays as CUPW moves from a national strike to rotating strikes. Canada Post continues to operate across Canada, except where there are rotating strikes.

September 16

Due to the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) national strike, residents and businesses may not receive mail from the City of New Westminster. For any outstanding balances, fees, or charges, daily interest may apply. Here are options for staying informed while letter mail is not an option.

This impacts:

Electric Utility Bills

To avoid late payments on their electric utility accounts, New Westminster Electric Utility customers are encouraged to create a Customer | Connect account to have online access to:

  • Account information
  • View current and past bills
  • View account payment history
  • Keep track of utility consumption history and conservation efforts
  • Select eBilling for electrical utility accounts

For more information, please contact the Revenue and Collections department at  or 604-527-4555.

Property Tax Notices

Final outstanding property tax and utility notices and other critical documents may be delayed due to the strike. To avoid late payments, residents are encouraged to register for a MyCity account to access information about their:

  • Property taxes
  • Water, sewer and solid waste utilities
  • Dog licences
  • Business licences
  • Permits

MyCity is a secure, all-in-one, online service that allows residents and businesses to access information about City of New Westminster accounts, view current and past bills, view payment history, and register for eBilling. It's easy to use and all information is protected by private access codes.

Vendor Payments

Vendors and customers working with the City should contact our Accounts Payable department at  to discuss any potential issues with cheque payment sent through the mail and other payment options.

Notices for Development/Planning & Public Engagement

The postal strike may also affect how the City issues certain development, planning, or public consultation notices that partially rely on mail delivery. These might include:

  • Notice letters and requests for comment for permit such as Development Permits, Development Variance Permits and Temporary use permits

  • Notification of Public Hearing or Public Hearing Not Held

  • Notification and request for comment for City-led engagement

  • Other planning correspondence to residents or businesses

Information on development applications is available on the City's public engagement platform, BeHeard New West, where you can learn more about a variety of City projects. Once you create an account, you can share your feedback and ideas with the City. You can also follow projects you are interested in and receive email updates about project changes.

Alternative options

  • E-newsletters — the City publishes a weekly email newsletter, Citypage, with information about upcoming consultation, project updates, events, notices, and more! The City also publishes a bi-weekly email newsletter, Invest New West, which focuses on topics of interest to the business community. Sign up for the City's e-newsletters.
  • Electronic notices / email alerts — where available, the City will send development notice information by email to registered stakeholders, mailing list subscribers, or property owners.
  • Be Heard Public Engagement webpages — all projects under public consultation will continue to be posted online (with background materials, maps, surveys, timelines). Register for Be Heard and learn more
  • City notifications via social media or website — for time-sensitive or revised opportunities, we may post notices on the City’s official social media channels as well as the What's Happening section of this website
  • In-person pick-up or display options — in limited cases, physical notice boards or posters may be placed in public locations (e.g. community centres, libraries) as fallback.

The City will also note clearly on each project’s page whether mailed notices are delayed and how residents can best keep informed.
