Project Update
The interim plaza on Belmont Street has now closed to allow for construction of the permanent Uptown Plaza, which will open upon completion of the Uptown Plaza and Sixth Street Public Realm Improvements.
Stay tuned for upcoming programs and events in the plaza this summer!
Do Enjoy, Don't Annoy
Please be respectful of others when using the space and observe the posted rules.

background
In order to accommodate more events and activations in the plaza space – and realize the longer-term plan for this plaza - Belmont Street has been closed to motor vehicle traffic between Sixth Street and the Belmont Towers laneway (located mid-block between Sixth and Seventh Street). The remainder of Belmont Street will remain open to motor vehicle traffic.
The plaza includes the following features within the full width of the street (refer to rendering below):
- Additional seating, sun umbrellas and bicycle parking;
- Street paint and traffic signage;
- Temporary water and power connections; and
- A “Free Little Library” (coming soon).
The changes to the Uptown Plaza are considered to be interim improvements and a permanent plaza is anticipated for construction in 2024. For more information about the permanent plaza, visit the project page at Be Heard New West.
project IMPACTS
The City of New Westminster is committed to minimizing traffic impacts whenever possible. However, we recognize that the project may impact you and others in the community. We anticipate the following impacts:
- Traffic: Full, permanent road closure of Belmont Street between Sixth Street and the laneway mid-block.
- Parking: Existing pay parking has been removed from Belmont Street between Sixth Street and the laneway mid-block. EVO parking has been relocated to Sixth Street and motorcycle parking will be relocated to Belmont Street and Seventh Street.
We do not expect any impacts to pedestrian mobility or emergency access as a result of this project. The sidewalk on Belmont Street will remain open for pedestrians. The New Westminster Fire Department was consulted and they have confirmed the street closure will have no impacts to their emergency response access.
