Project Update
The off-leash area is now suitable for use. Please note that construction is ongoing and that there may be some temporary closures required while gates are being adjusted.
What's Happening
The City of New Westminster is pleased to announce that it has secured a temporary 5-year lease for a portion of the vacant land at 260 Ross Drive, currently owned by the Fraser Health Authority, for use as an off-leash dog area. This initiative is supported by the Victoria Hill Ginger Drive Residents Association and addresses the community's need for more spaces for off-leash dog activity.
Details about the Off-Leash Dog Area:
Fencing: The off-leash dog area will be fully enclosed by a fence to ensure the safety of both dogs and people, in compliance with the City's People, Parks, and Pups Strategy.
Surfacing: The surface will consist of the existing grass.
Hours of Operation: Dawn till dusk
Construction Timeline: Construction is scheduled to begin Tuesday, May 13 - June 31, 2025
Project History
In early 2022, City Council adopted the People, Parks, and Pups Strategy to create a balanced approach to sharing New Westminster's limited park space between those with dogs and those without. As part of this 10-year framework, the strategy recommends guidelines for planning, designing, and managing off-leash dog areas throughout the city. Given the challenges of limited space and changing land use within the city, staff are taking this opportunity to establish a temporary off-leash dog area at 260 Ross Drive in the Victoria Hill-Ginger Drive neighbourhood.
