Project Overview
The City of New Westminster is restoring the green space surrounding the playground south of the Queensborough Community Centre.
Years of heavy foot traffic have compacted the soil across this area, leading to uneven ground, poor turf growth, and stress on the root systems of mature trees. To improve lawn health and protect the surrounding tree canopy, crews will:
- Loosen and aerate the topsoil layer to improve drainage and root aeration
- Install organic mulch rings around mature trees to protect root zones
- Apply hydroseed to establish a durable, healthy lawn.
Impacts and Access
To maintain community access and avoid fencing off the entire lawn at once, work will take place in two phases:
- Phase 1: Fall 2026 – Spring 2027
- Phase 2: Spring 2027
The playground and adjacent pathways will remain open throughout construction. We will install temporary perimeter fencing around the active work area while the grass germinates and establishes.
Please respect the on-site signage and keep off the freshly hydroseeded area to ensure successful establishment.
