Joshua Watts

Joshua Watts is a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and Nuu-Chah-Nulth artist whose work bridges cultural tradition and contemporary expression. Over the past 12 years, his practice has grown to encompass large-scale public artworks, carvings, prints, and paintings that serve as both cultural landmarks and spaces for reflection.

Rooted in the teachings and knowledge of his community, Joshua’s art is guided by a deep respect for traditional forms and stories, while continually exploring how they live and evolve in the present. His work moves fluidly between monumental and intimate scales—ranging from towering totem poles and expansive murals to finely carved masks, installations, and traditional dugout canoes. Each piece carries a sense of story, identity, and continuity, connecting the past to the present and inviting dialogue between cultures.

Joshua’s public works have become touchpoints for community gathering and storytelling, designed not only to be seen but to be experienced. His creative approach balances reverence and innovation, demonstrating how Indigenous art continues to shape and speak to contemporary spaces. Whether carved from cedar or rendered in modern materials, his works embody resilience, connection, and transformation.
