City of New Westminster launches ‘my-waste’™ recycling and garbage collection mobile App

New Westminster, BC – The City of New Westminster is now offering smartphone and tablet users a free new mobile app that puts garbage, recycling, and cleaner, greener collection details at their fingertips.

“The City of New Westminsteris pleased to announce that we’ve just launched a mobile App that makes remembering your collection date and accessing information about the City’s garbage and recycling services easier than ever, “ said  Mayor Wayne Wright.

The ‘my-waste’™ App allows mobile device users to download the full range of information that is normally available on the City’s website and collection schedule and also provides customized reminders tailored specifically to their neighbourhood. Reminders can be sent weekly, or just when the collection day changes, such as holidays or special events.

Special features of the City of New Westminster ‘my-waste’™ App include a search function that lets residents quickly find information about what to do with a regular or out-of-the-ordinary item, plus there are tips for reducing and recycling waste in apartment and condo buildings. The ‘my-waste’™ App also includes a “report-a-problem” function that allows residents to report collection-related issues such as missed collections, illegal dumping, and more.

“This is a great new way for us to connect with residents and share the latest information about our city’s residential collection program,” said Kristian Davis, Supervisor of Solid Waste and Recycling.  “We want to make recycling and yard and food scrap collection as easy as possible. We hope that this App will do just that.”

Residents can download the ‘my-waste’™ App by going to http://www.my-waste.mobi/BC-NewWestminster/, then selecting the icon link either to the iPhone/iPad or Android App store. A link to the app can also be found on the City of New Westminster website homepage at www.newwestcity.ca The ‘my-waste’™ version for the Blackberry is coming when RIM releases its new operating system, expected in early 2013. The City of New Westminster will continue to distribute printed materials and display information on the city website.
