New Westminster Electric Utility charts path to net-zero future in bold new Strategic Plan

The City of New Westminster is launching an ambitious transformation of its 134-year-old Electric Utility, repositioning B.C.’s oldest continuously operating electrical utility as a provincial leader in clean energy, grid modernization, and climate resilience. The newly released Electric Utility Strategic Plan for 2026–2030 outlines a five-year roadmap to modernize energy services while supporting growth and advancing climate action in one of Metro Vancouver’s fastest-growing urban communities.

Aligned with the City’s goal of achieving net-zero community emissions by 2050, the Plan prepares the Utility to respond to rapid electrification, population growth, aging infrastructure, and climate change through innovation, resilience, and strategic investment.

The strategy is built around five key priorities:

  • Essential Community Service
  • Operational Excellence and Customer Service
  • Financial Sustainability
  • Foster Innovation
  • Partnerships

Together, these priorities will guide investments in grid modernization, infrastructure renewal, climate resilience, customer service, emerging technologies, and partnerships through 2030.
