Westminster Pier Park Overpass and Play Area

Project Status

Construction of the new Sixth Street Overpass, Ramp and Stairs into Westminster Pier Park and of the Play Area and plaza space completed and the Play Area was opened on April 2, 2021.

Westminster Pier Park Play Area at Sixth Street

In August, 2020 the Parks and Recreation Department began construction of the replacement playground in Westminster Pier Park, located below the new Sixth Street Overpass and Ramp. Building upon the success of the City’s award-winning riverfront park, the renewed play space will complement the recreational experience of existing and future westward expansion of Westminster Pier Park.

Developed through consultation with the community, the renewed playground will improve upon the former play space with flexible spaces and age-specific play zones to create an experientially rich place with diverse play types that accommodate all ages and abilities. The design also capitalizes on the unique opportunities offered by the pedestrian overpass and surrounding inclined walkways, allowing play all year round with much needed weather protection in Westminster Pier Park. The renewed play area is anticipated for completion in late fall/ early winter 2020.

Public consultation for the renewed play area in Westminster Pier Park was completed in March 2020. Subsequently, the Parks and Recreation Department presented the consultation results and preferred design concept to Mayor and Council for endorsement in April 2020. Sixth Street Pedestrian Overpass

The Sixth Street accessible overpass and ramp between Westminster Pier Park and the Front Street Parkade at Sixth Street is now open!

As a result of the opening of the overpass, the pedestrian pathway through the BOSA construction site will be closed starting on on Tuesday, August 4th. Access between Westminster Pier Park and the River Market will be detoured via Columbia Street to Begbie Street. Look for directional wayfinding signs to guide you.

Please note that the east and central stairs leading to the overpass are still under construction and a few temporary measures are in place that will be completed over the coming months.
